Eartal and Saban, two young 'street runners' from Genk, regularly meet on the slag heap hill. They spout their criticism of the city and the world. One day they hear unusual noises. They find two old men: Job and Tieu. One of them has become unwell. The men explain to them that they often come to walk on the slag heap, that the slag heap is very important to the eldest and that his last wish is to be buried there. The two young people care about the old man's fate: they ensure that he returns home and they reflect onhis last wish. In the end, they come up with a fantastic plan. They make this plan known in and to the city of Genk.
Wim Cuyvers (°1958) spent his youth in Eksel, barely twenty kilometers from Genk. He studied in Ghent and continued to live there until he moved to the French Jura in 2000.
As an architect, he made designs for homes, schools, daycare centers, art places, etc., he used arts festivals to install space. Together with students (A.o.), he went on a search for what he called 'the back of public space' at first, later 'public space' and ultimately 'space with a high degree of publicity'. Eventually he came to realize that he was simply looking for spaces that lead outside. Since 2009 he has worked as a forest ranger at Le Montavoies in the French Jura.
Veldwerkers (field workers) is a large-scale project that unfolds over three years, aimed at a wide audience in Genk and beyond, initiated by four partners: C-mine, Jester, Ciel Grommen & Maximiliaan Royakkers, and 51N4E.
Veldwerkers invites three artists or collectives, to develop a new work that relates to the terril of Winterslag and/or the larger C-mine area, its history, and possible futures. For three consecutive years, 2022, 2023, 2024, the partners will work with one artist/collective towards a large-scale outcome, in a form that connects to the practice of the artist/collective.
