Nura Afnan-Samandari
Currents is one of the most important development platforms for visual arts in the Euregion. The group exhibition is curated by a team of young and upcoming curators, and shows work by recently graduated artists from academies in the southern Netherlands, Belgium and North Rhine-Westphalia. The event is embedded in a broader mentoring program with a central focus on training, networking and professionalisation. Four of the selected artists are invited to develop their work during a Jester residency.
Currents 11 takes place from 21 September to 3 November 2024 at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht.
Nura Afnan-Samandari (*1993) studied Fine Art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 2017, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Teaching at the University of Cologne. Currently, Afnan-Samandari lives and works in Düsseldorf, where she shares a studio space with the collective Linienstraße, which provides a space for both exhibition and production of art.
The artist compares her sketchbooks to architecture. Thus, her drawing work becomes a starting point for the design of the space. While walking through a building or turning the pages of a book, viewers place themselves in the middle of a work. Afnan-Samandari chooses the material for a spatial installation like she chooses the right pen for a particular type of paper, relying on her intuition to fill in both. Taking space and giving space in one gesture.
